Reddit karma requirements: why your post was removed
- Many subreddits use AutoModerator to remove posts and comments from accounts below a minimum karma or account age.
- The thresholds are usually not published, differ by subreddit, and removals often happen without any message.
- Your removed post still looks normal to you. Check it from a logged-out or private window to see if it is really public.
- The fix is time and genuine participation: comment helpfully in communities you care about until your account has history.
What a karma requirement actually is
Karma is the score Reddit gives your account from upvotes on your posts and comments. Subreddit moderators can set rules in AutoModerator, Reddit's built-in moderation bot, that check a few things about you before your post goes live. The most common checks are:
- Minimum karma, sometimes split into post karma and comment karma
- Minimum account age, from a few days to several weeks or more
- A verified email address on the account
- Reddit's own spam and quality signals for accounts, which moderators can use as well
If your account doesn't meet the rule, the post or comment is removed or held for review automatically. Nobody looked at it. Nothing was wrong with what you wrote.
Why you weren't told
Most communities don't publish their exact numbers, because spammers would simply aim for them. Many rules also remove content silently, so there's no notification. From your side, the post appears normally on your profile and in the thread. It's only invisible to everyone else.
This hits two kinds of accounts hardest: brand-new accounts, and older accounts that were inactive for a long time and have very little karma.
How to check if your post was removed
- Copy the link to your post.
- Open a private or incognito window where you are not logged in to Reddit.
- Paste the link. If the post is missing, says it was removed, or the thread doesn't show your comment, it was filtered.
You can also look at the subreddit's newest posts from a logged-out window and see whether yours is listed.
What to do about it
1. Read the rules and the sidebar
Some subreddits do state their requirements in the rules, the sidebar or a pinned post. Others list a weekly thread where newer accounts are welcome to share.
2. Message the moderators, politely
If you think your post was caught by mistake, send a short message to the moderators through the subreddit's "Message the mods" link. Don't post it again in the meantime; reposting removed content can look like spam.
3. Verify your email
Some filters check for a verified email. It takes a minute in your Reddit settings.
4. Build real history first
The long-term fix is the boring one: take part in communities you actually care about. Helpful comments on other people's posts earn karma steadily and give your account the history these filters look for. Our guide on how to build karma on a new account covers this step by step.
5. Avoid karma shortcuts
"Free karma" subreddits, upvote swaps and bought accounts can get an account flagged or banned, and many filters already account for them. They aren't worth the risk.
Where Reddit Pilot fits
Building history means showing up every day, which is hard when you're busy. Reddit Pilot is a Chrome extension that helps with that daily part: it leaves short, on-topic comments in subreddits you choose, at a slow, randomized pace you set, from your own account. It never creates posts, sends messages or votes. Your own posts stay yours.
Use it with care: some subreddits don't allow AI-assisted comments, so leave those off your list, and keep the pace modest.
Frequently asked questions
How much karma do you need to post on Reddit?
There is no single number. Each subreddit sets its own rules, and most don't publish them. Smaller communities often have no requirement, while large ones commonly require some karma and an account that is at least a few days or weeks old.
Why was my Reddit post removed with no message?
Most likely an AutoModerator rule removed it automatically because your account was below the subreddit's karma or account-age requirement. These removals are often silent, and the post still looks normal to you.
How can I tell if my Reddit post is visible?
Open the post link in a private or incognito window where you are not logged in. If it is missing or marked as removed, it was filtered.
Is it OK to use free karma subreddits?
It is risky. Upvote swapping and karma farming can get an account flagged, and many filters already discount that kind of karma. Genuine comments in real communities are safer.
